CVS Deals – 01/17 through 01/23

My sister and I are planning to go to CVS together this evening. She has $2.00 ECBs and a rain check to cash in – both from her very first bargaining visit!

I promised to come up with some good beginner’s scenarios based on deals I knew of, so here goes:

We’ll start with the rain check:

Nivea Body Wash – $5.99
Get $5.00 ECBs (Limit 1)
$0.99 after ECBs

She’ll pay with $2.00 ECBs and $3.99 (plus tax) out of pocket – and get $5.00 ECBs back.

Since she mentioned needing paper products, we’ll cash in on this deal at the second store:

Cottonelle Double Rolls (20 count) – $12.88
Get $4.00 ECBs (Limit 3)
Use $0.50/1 (SmartSource 12/13)
$8.38 after coupon and ECBs

She’ll pay with $5.00 ECBs and $7.38 out of pocket – and get $4.00 ECBs back. Not bad for the equivalent of 40 rolls of bathroom tissue!

The deals really aren’t all that great this week, so I’ll probably go for two of these:

SoyJoy Box (6-count) – $6.00
Get $6.00 ECBs (Limit 3)
FREE after ECBs

Friday, January 15, 2010

CVS Deals – 01/10 thru 01/16

Believe it or not, this CVS Fan hadn’t been to a CVS since my outing with my sister on December 26! Since I had ECBs that had to be used, I made two trips yesterday.

On the first trip, I picked up these deals:

Buy two CVS Reusable Bags – $0.99 each
Get $1.00 ECB (Limit 1)
$0.49 each after ECB

Buy two Pantene Shampoo, Conditioner, or Styler – two for $6.97
Get $2.00 ECBs (Limit 1)
Use $3.00/2 coupon (P&G 12/27)
$0.98 cents each after coupon and ECBs

Cottonelle Double Rolls (20 count) – $12.88
Get $4.00 ECBs (Limit 3)
Use $0.50/1 (SmartSource 12/13)
$8.38 after coupon and ECBs

All Christmas items have been marked down to 90% off, so I also picked up two rolls of wrapping paper for $0.39 and $0.29!

I paid with $19 ECBs ($15 from taking a survey!) and $1.38 out of pocket – and got back $9.50 ECBs ($2.50 from fall spending).

On the second trip, I got these deals:

SoyJoy Box (6-count) – $6.00
Get $6.00 ECBs (Limit 3)
FREE after ECBs

I also redeemed the rain check from the week of December 26:

Nivea Body Wash – $5.99
Get $5.00 ECBs (Limit 1)
Use $2.00/1 printable coupon
FREE plus $1.01 overage after coupons and ECBs

I also picked up four boxes of small candy canes (50 count each) for $0.19 each and some Christmas garland for $0.39 (Think: ministry with children!) I paid with $11 ECBs and $0.38 out of pocket – and got back $11 ECBs!

This is not necessarily the greatest week for deals, but since I had $24 ECBs I had to spend this week, I’m thankful to have stocked up on household paper for (almost) free!

Gotta love CVS!

CVS-ing with my Sister!

For the most part, I took a (much-needed) break from couponing over the Christmas Holidays...

Two main exceptions were using up Register Rewards at Walgreens on staples (including milk and eggs) and taking my sister to "show her the ropes" at CVS.

We were both shocked when the cashier told her there was now a $7.00 charge to apply for an Extra Care Card... Thankfully, he was joking!

We each used a $5.00 off $20 Purchase Coupon (from The Sacramento Bee online) to get some great deals. I went for the following:

Revlon Lip Stick – B1G1 for $7.99
Get $5.00 ECBs (Limit 3)
Used $2.00/1 coupon (SmartSource 12/13)
FREE plus $4.01 overage after coupon and ECBs

Oral-B Dental Floss (55 yards) – $2.88
Get $2.00 ECBs (Limit 1)
Used $1.00/1 coupon (P&G 11/29)
FREE plus $0.12 overage after coupons and ECBs

Neosporin Lip Health – $5.39
Used $2.50/1 CVS Clip-Free Coupon (automatically applied)
Used $3.00/1 printable coupon
FREE after coupons

Buy $12 of Glade Products, Get $4.00 ECBs (Limit 1)
Bought two Scented Oil Candle Holders – $3.00 each
Bought two Scented Oil Candle Refills – $3.00 each
Used coupon for Free Refill wyb any Holder (SmartSource 12/06)
Stacked with two $1.50/1 Candle Holder coupons (from previous holder boxes)
$2.00 for everything after coupons and ECBs

Sambucol – $12.99
Used $7.00/1 CVS Clip-Free Coupon (automatically applied)
$5.99 after coupons

I paid $2.27 out of pocket after coupons and $13.96 ECBs – and earned $16 ECBs for next time!

We both got a raincheck for the following deal:

Nivea Body Wash – $5.99
Get $5.00 ECBs (Limit 1)
Use $2.00/1 printable coupon
FREE plus $1.01 overage after coupons and ECBs

My sister was especially interested in the Sambucol deal. When it was all said and done, she left CVS with three Sambucol, an Oral-B Dental Floss and Neosporin Lip Care for slightly more than the regular price of one Sambucol – plus $2.00 ECBs for next time. She was happy!

And I had fun with my best childhood friend!

Tuesday, December 15, 2009

CVS Deals – 12/13 thru 12/19

The first three items are part of the 3-Day Sale – ending today!

FREE after ECBs

Merry Brite Red & Green Holiday Gift Tissue (20 count) – $1.99
Get $1.99 ECBs (Limit 2)
FREE after ECBs

Merry Brite Peel ‘N Stick Gift Tags (50 count) – $1.99
Get $1.99 ECBs (Limit 2)
FREE after ECBs

And I had another rain check for Glade items:

Buy $12 of Glade Products, Get $4.00 ECBs (Limit 1)

My Deal:
Two Scented Oil Candle Holders – on sale $3.00 each
Two Scented Oil Candle Refills – $4.69 each
Use two coupons for Free Refills (up to $3.99 value) wyb any Holder
Stack with two $1.50/1 Candle Holder
$0.40 total for everything after coupons and ECBs!

Furthermore, I paid with $17.88 in ECBs and $2.22 out of pocket (mostly tax), and left with $17.94 ECBs more! Gotta love CVS!

"Black Friday" Blessings

I'm no fan of all the pushing, shoving, grabbing, and (even at best) mad rushing that "Black Friday" can all-too-easily represent. We tried the 5:00 a.m. thing once at one store (something like eight years ago) and decided to add it to the "cultural experience" category...

I'm truly thankful for the grace of God, teaching me contentment. (I'm still learning!) I'm also thankful that just over a year ago, my dear friend Andrea helped me discover bargain shopping aided by coupons – and the fun of blogging about the deals, too. (I miss you, friend!)

That said, I did run a couple errands on Thursday and Friday to CVS and Walgreens and, at the very last moment, Home Depot.

I made two trips to CVS, hoping that the $5 off $25 Coupons would start printing for me again (but maybe there's a limit, and I reached mine?!) At any rate, I'm thankful for the following deals:

And I made one trip to Walgreens:

Two packs of Holiday Peanut M&Ms will soon be traveling to South America with "los Abu" who left town yesterday morning.

The Home Depot deals were mostly for the purpose of (much needed!) organization. I was delighted to find that the shelves were reduced, and the storage containers are still on sale until tomorrow, December 2. The poinsettias were just too good a deal to pass up at $0.99 each – there were only five of 1800 left by late Friday!

I'm thankful for these bargains and blessings!

Besides all the exciting deals at Publix (still valid through today!), Super Savers for the weekend included:

Used three $1.00/1 Target coupons
Used two $1.00/1 printable coupons
Used one $1.00/2 printable coupon
Total: $0.87 each

At Walgreens:

All of this (coupon details here), PLUS two gallons of milk for only $3.95 out of pocket – after coupons and $15.50 RRs! And with the SC Johnson rebate, I’ll actually be earning $5.00 back on Glade products!

Additional bargains at Walgreens included:

Use two coupons for Free Refills wyb any Holder (SmartSource 11/01)
Stack with two B2G1 Refills (SmartSource 11/01)
$0.92 each after coupons and EBCs

However, I checked four stores – and all of them were out of holders. (Of course! It was Saturday evening, after all.) I had to adjust my plan, getting three refills at one store and three more at another store (with the B2G1 coupon) and earning $3.00 ECBs. (That’s the beauty of the Extra Care Card – it “remembers” your purchases for you.) I got my first CVS rain check and will be going back for three holders, getting three free refills (with the B1G1 coupon), and earning $6.00 ECBs – and then $10.00 more from SC Johnson rebates! (Limit three rebates per household – with a mail-in deadline of 06/30/10.)

Basically, I’ll end up with nine Scented Oil Candle Refills and three Holders FREE – plus $1.50 overage after rebates! I'm very excited about these Glade deals because I plan to use them as Christmas presents and hostess gifts during extensive travel next year, Lord willing!

last week's savings

When I post about savings, a primary goal is that the content be current or educational or both (and not merely the mounting of a virtual moose rack). This week I'm differing from my norm of posting only current deals by posting about savings strategies at the two drugstores I frequent.

Pictured here are last week's savings at CVS:

I didn't compile and post my own "CVS Shopping List" for this trip as I usually do either right before or right after going; at the last-minute I decided the deals posted at MoneySavingMom were too good to pass up.

Total (sale) value: $29.99
Total out of pocket after $10 in coupons and $2.00 ECBs: $17.99 (plus tax)
ECBs earned: $12 ECBs

This was an unusual trip as I had only $2.00 ECBs to spend. I normally have more and end up paying about $2.00 or less out of pocket after coupons and ECBs. This trip resembles more of a Getting-Started-at-CVS scenario – where you actually spend some real money out of pocket in order to build up some ECBs that you can later combine with more coupons in order to get more ECBs, and so on.

Last week I basically got the Cambell's Soup FREE and paid $1.00 per bottle of name-brand shampoo and conditioner and $2.99 for the ($9.00) "Tickle Toothbrush" – which will become either a Christmas or birthday present.

At the risk of sounding like a broken record, I would say that the biggest money-saving tips are:
  • Use the higher-value printable coupons.
  • Combine those and newspaper coupons with sales and ECBs and stock up on what you'll need – so you never have to pay full price for the everyday essentials of a household!

I find Walgreens to be a good bit more complicated (and perhaps not as user-friendly) as CVS. (You can read earlier thoughts about CVS versus Walgreens.) So, I've adopted a new strategy for shopping at Walgreens. In a nutshell, I get the Register Rewards deals I need or will use, pay out of pocket for them in order to avoid couponing hassles, and then use the RRs for staples like milk and eggs, school supplies, and birthday and Christmas presents.

I still have to watch out for one aggravating rule: "Number of coupons in the transaction cannot exceed the number of items in that transaction." But this new approach has been a lot less stressful than trying to fix botched transactions where coupons didn't scan or RRs didn't print. (I do politely ask if something didn't go as planned, but I've chosen not to argue with individual store cashiers or managers when couponing policies differ from one store to the next. You can read more thoughts on why here.)

Pictured here are last week's savings at Walgreens:

Total (sale) value: $42.21
Total out of pocket after $9.26 in coupons: $33.13 (includes tax)
RRs earned: $32.50 RRs
I basically paid $0.63 for all that loot!

These are savings from trips to three stores. Since Walgreens does not have a store "loyalty card" (like the Extra Care Card at CVS), I visit several stores in order to maximize the savings.

Stay tuned for a post on frugality that factors in time and energy spent.

At the second store, I spent $1.01 out of pocket – after coupons and ECBs and the $6.99 from the first store. And I earned $2.00 ECBs more.

I love it when CVS Extra Care Bucks help the grocery bill!

All of this for $0.40 – after coupons and ECBs!

I’m hoping to add some treats, too! I’m working on a good candy deal – after coupons and ECBs. The challenge is that the higher value coupons are for bigger bags – as would be expected!

Buy four Nestle Fun Size Bags – $2.50 each
Buy four Hershey’s Fun Size Bags – $2.50 each
Coupons possibly available include:

Gotta love CVS!

Here's what CVS did today to make me love 'em even more!

All this for a grand total of less than $2.00 – after coupons and ECBs!

Used $5 off $25 purchase CVS coupon
Used three $1.00/1 Tide coupons
Used one $0.25/1 Dawn coupon

The cashier was a trainee, so the manager helped to scan coupons. Even she was excited about the result – from over $26.00 (including tax) to under $2.00 after coupons and ECBs! Gotta love 'em!

At a second store: All this for under $2.00 – after coupons and ECBs!

Total before coupons: over $27.00 (plus tax)
Used $2 off $10 CVS brand purchase coupon
Used $2 off two CVS brand Nut Products coupon
(CVS brand nuts are on sale this week: three for $10! And both CVS coupons printed when I scanned my Extra Care Card at the "coupon machine" when I entered the store!)

Used $11.00 ECBs
Total out of pocket: $1.27

And I left with $5 ECBs more to spend on next week's deals! Gotta love CVS!
