December 10 Update:

Before coupons, this represents a $51.55 value. However, thanks to coupons and a friendly Walgreens that allowed those coupons (including $15 Register Rewards, which would have expired tomorrow) to exceed the number of items in the transaction, I paid only $15.35 out of pocket – and I walked out with all this plus $31 Register Rewards more! (It almost reminds me of the excitement of the EasySaver Catalog Days!)

"Black Friday" Blessings

I'm no fan of all the pushing, shoving, grabbing, and (even at best) mad rushing that "Black Friday" can all-too-easily represent. We tried the 5:00 a.m. thing once at one store (something like eight years ago) and decided to add it to the "cultural experience" category...

I'm truly thankful for the grace of God, teaching me contentment. (I'm still learning!) I'm also thankful that just over a year ago, my dear friend Andrea helped me discover bargain shopping aided by coupons – and the fun of blogging about the deals, too. (I miss you, friend!)

That said, I did run a couple errands on Thursday and Friday to CVS and Walgreens and, at the very last moment, Home Depot.

I made two trips to CVS, hoping that the $5 off $25 Coupons would start printing for me again (but maybe there's a limit, and I reached mine?!) At any rate, I'm thankful for the following deals:

Two packs of Holiday Peanut M&Ms will soon be traveling to South America with "los Abu" who left town yesterday morning.

The Home Depot deals were mostly for the purpose of (much needed!) organization. I was delighted to find that the shelves were reduced, and the storage containers are still on sale until tomorrow, December 2. The poinsettias were just too good a deal to pass up at $0.99 each – there were only five of 1800 left by late Friday!

Perhaps the most exciting aspect of last week's trip (confirmed by today's trip) was discovering a Walgreens where the staff are friendly to couponers! On purpose this afternoon, I got into the check-out line with two coupons more than items in the transaction. (Remember the Walgreens rule?) However, the friendly cashier made everything scan just fine – and I was even able to use $2.00 Register Rewards, too! (I didn't try to use more RRs since today was only a test!) Maybe shopping at Walgreens won't be so bad from now on...

However, I checked four stores – and all of them were out of holders. (Of course! It was Saturday evening, after all.) I had to adjust my plan, getting three refills at one store and three more at another store (with the B2G1 coupon) and earning $3.00 ECBs. (That’s the beauty of the Extra Care Card – it “remembers” your purchases for you.) I got my first CVS rain check and will be going back for three holders, getting three free refills (with the B1G1 coupon), and earning $6.00 ECBs – and then $10.00 more from SC Johnson rebates! (Limit three rebates per household – with a mail-in deadline of 06/30/10.)

Basically, I’ll end up with nine Scented Oil Candle Refills and three Holders FREE – plus $1.50 overage after rebates! I'm very excited about these Glade deals because I plan to use them as Christmas presents and hostess gifts during extensive travel next year, Lord willing!

last week's savings

When I post about savings, a primary goal is that the content be current or educational or both (and not merely the mounting of a virtual moose rack). This week I'm differing from my norm of posting only current deals by posting about savings strategies at the two drugstores I frequent.

I didn't compile and post my own "CVS Shopping List" for this trip as I usually do either right before or right after going; at the last-minute I decided the deals posted at MoneySavingMom were too good to pass up.

Total (sale) value: $29.99
Total out of pocket after $10 in coupons and $2.00 ECBs: $17.99 (plus tax)
ECBs earned: $12 ECBs

This was an unusual trip as I had only $2.00 ECBs to spend. I normally have more and end up paying about $2.00 or less out of pocket after coupons and ECBs. This trip resembles more of a Getting-Started-at-CVS scenario – where you actually spend some real money out of pocket in order to build up some ECBs that you can later combine with more coupons in order to get more ECBs, and so on.

Last week I basically got the Cambell's Soup FREE and paid $1.00 per bottle of name-brand shampoo and conditioner and $2.99 for the ($9.00) "Tickle Toothbrush" – which will become either a Christmas or birthday present.

At the risk of sounding like a broken record, I would say that the biggest money-saving tips are:

• Use the higher-value printable coupons.
• Combine those and newspaper coupons with sales and ECBs and stock up on what you'll need – so you never have to pay full price for the everyday essentials of a household!

I find Walgreens to be a good bit more complicated (and perhaps not as user-friendly) as CVS. (You can read earlier thoughts about CVS versus Walgreens.) So, I've adopted a new strategy for shopping at Walgreens. In a nutshell, I get the Register Rewards deals I need or will use, pay out of pocket for them in order to avoid couponing hassles, and then use the RRs for staples like milk and eggs, school supplies, and birthday and Christmas presents.

I still have to watch out for one aggravating rule: "Number of coupons in the transaction cannot exceed the number of items in that transaction." But this new approach has been a lot less stressful than trying to fix botched transactions where coupons didn't scan or RRs didn't print. (I do politely ask if something didn't go as planned, but I've chosen not to argue with individual store cashiers or managers when couponing policies differ from one store to the next. These are savings from trips to three stores. Since Walgreens does not have a store "loyalty card" (like the Extra Care Card at CVS), I visit several stores in order to maximize the savings.

Since ending the EasySaver Program (Sniff! Sniff!), Walgreens hasn’t been the best place for real deals – especially because of its complicated coupon rules, which seem to vary from store to store. To avoid those frustrations, I’ve taken a new approach to shopping Walgreens in the past couple of months. More often than not, I've been buying Register Rewards deals (which thankfully haven’t been phased out yet) and then using that “money” toward other items that we need. For example, in the past month I’ve stocked up on the Vaseline Lotion (a must at our house during winter) and used the RRs to buy a nice birthday present, party supplies for K-3, Christmas presents, and staples like milk and eggs. So, I’m thankful!

By the way, this trip will probably be a learning experience; I’m hoping I can combine coupons and RR on this trip. (Stacking didn’t work for the Dry Idea deodorant deal last week. I was told it was because I used the $2.00/1 coupon, and I’ve read that others had the same experience.) The buzz on the frugal blogosphere is that Walgreens plans to phase out the Register Rewards program by October of this year. (Oh well, it never worked as easily as the CVS Extra Care Bucks program anyway!)

Here’s the gist of what I read:

Walgreens is slowly revamping the registers to make it so you have to pay full price to qualify for RR. The registers are all being re-programmed not to print RR when coupons are used; this applies to both manufacturer and RR. (Remember that RR are really manufacturer coupons and not “store money” – unlike Extra Care Bucks at CVS).

The silver lining is that I’ll save the time I would otherwise use trying to figure out how to best spend Register Rewards before they expire!

Update on Walgreens Deals (06/10 & 06/11)

In my plan for the $5 off $25 purchase coupon, I stated that I planned to pay for my purchases with $12 RR from last week, bringing my total out of pocket to about $9.00; however, I neglected to do what I "always" do to figure out the actual out of pocket after coupons and before RR! (How embarrassing!)

So, in actuality I paid $13.96 out of pocket after RR from the previous week (which thankfully scanned with no problem!) and the last $8.24 from my Easy Saver Rebates Gift Card. And I did get $18 RR in return.


Dove Soap was $2.61 per 2-pack (not $2.24 as I had hoped), adding $2.96 more to the grand total. But the store gave me some wonderful free samples and honored the rain check for the free Aveeno Travel Bag.


So, all in all, it was a fairly good trip.

Walgreens Deals – 05/31 thru 06/06

I’m excited! I started with $11.50 in RR, went to two stores, used a $3 off $10 purchase coupon Walgreens mailed me, and came home with all these goodies for only $3.15 out of pocket – plus $12.00 more in RR!

Remember a Walgreens rule: Number of coupons per transaction (including Register Rewards) cannot exceed number of items purchased. I obviously had to add in some “filler items” (nine packs of five binder dividers on clearance for $0.25 each) in order to be able to use all my RR (expiring today)!

I did have a bit of trouble with one coupon making the register beep at the first store and then not posting; the manager had to void the whole transaction and start over. At the second store, the $10 RR for the hair dryer didn’t print initially, and I was told it was because I was paying with RR! But a manager scanned another dryer (pictured in the ad), and it also rang up for only $12.99! The $10 RR printed, too – and I left the store very happy!

I’m thankful for cheap olives (a family favorite!) and a basically FREE name-brand (worldwide dual voltage) travel hair dryer! But I can’t resist saying it: If you’re a bargain shopper, Walgreens is another reason to love CVS!
